May 13, 2005

Last night, at the Opening Night Celebration for the Salem Theatre Company's production of Gore Vidal's THE BEST MAN, the nonprofit community arts group announced its new Artistic Director for the 2005-2006 Season. The evening was attended by local elected officials, community leaders, and arts supporters.

After introductions from STC President Rob Gray and Salem's State Representative John Keenan, outgoing STC Founding Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo welcomed Paul T. Mitri as the new Artistic Director. Mitri expressed his desire to continue the mission of the STC in building a home for the performing arts in downtown Salem. "The Salem Theatre Company has already done so much for this community," Mitri remarked, "our goal is not only to keep that momentum going but to take things to a whole new level."

One of the founders and long-time artistic director of the Seattle Shakespeare Festival, a professional theatre company in Washington, Mitri has taught theatre in Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Egypt, and Japan, and now is an associate professor of theatre at Salem State College. A Salem resident, Mitri will bring his talents as a director, writer, choreographer, and actor to bear in planning the STC's new season and taking the helm for the four mainstage productions of 2005-2006. The plays that the group will produce next year will be announced later this summer. The season will focus mostly on comedies and light-hearted fare.

Representative Keenan praised the work of the STC and its founder in enriching Salem’s cultural and educational offerings. He also pointed out the economic benefits that the theatre company has provided for the city. "Industry research shows that for every $1 spent on a theatre ticket, that patron spends $4 on the local economy," Keenan said, "That means that with over $130,000 in ticket sales for its first three years, the Salem Theatre Company has pumped over half a million dollars into the Salem economy. Of its 12,000 patrons in that time, 9,600 have dined out at one of our local restaurants. This is why the STC is a great force for positive growth in our quality of life and our economy." Keenan presented Pangallo with a resolution of congratulations from the Massachusetts House of Representatives and a letter of thanks from U.S. Representative John Tierney.

Pangallo, who also celebrated his 24th birthday at the event, will be leaving Salem at the end of this summer to pursue a graduate degree in Shakespearean Studies at the Globe Theatre in London. He encouraged everyone to continue their support of the group and observed that what makes a theatre company a success is not one personality or leader, but all of the patrons, donors, actors, volunteers, and board members that give of their time and talent to make it a success. "Even though I am stepping down," he said, "the Salem Theatre Company is stepping up. We have done a great deal, staging our productions, providing readings for new works by local playwrights, bringing theatre workshops to local schools, partnering with other community organizations, winning numerous awards and grants...but we can and must do more. There is much left to accomplish and I am confident that under Paul's leadership, the Salem Theatre Company will continue to grow and achieve great things."

THE BEST MAN, a classic American political drama by award-winning novelist Gore Vidal, runs for three weekends only: May 12 - 28, Thursdays and Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 7:00pm. The show is staged at St. Peter's Church hall, located at 24 St. Peter Street in downtown Salem, MA. Tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for students and seniors, and can be booked by calling 978-790-8546 or visiting the STC website at www.SalemTheatre.org.

SALEM THEATRE WELCOMES AUDIENCE TO VOTE FOR "THE BEST MAN"

Salem, MA -- Two candidates go head-to-head for the highest office in the land. One is an idealistic, intellectual liberal from New England. The other is an ambitious, conservative, self-made man from the South.

No, it's not the 2004 Presidential Election; it's Gore Vidal's classic American political drama "The Best Man". Written in 1963, the play depicts the cutthroat action that goes on behind the scenes in the last few days of a fictional presidential nominating convention set in a Philadelphia hotel in 1960. Though written more than forty years ago, the play explores many themes and characters that are still relevant today. "Vidal's play is both timeless and timely," notes production director Dominick Pangallo, "With humor, sadness, and at times rich irony, the playwright delves deep and shows all sides of the candidates, the pundits, the press, even the public."

The final production of the theatre company's 2004-2005 Second Season, "The Best Man" was preceded by productions of Anne Nelson's "The Guys" in September 2004, Barbara Robinson's "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" in December 2004, and the American premiere of Seamus Heaney's "The Burial at Thebes" in February 2005. "All of the plays of the second season," notes STC president Rob Gray, "were chosen because they speak to the issue of humanity's perpetual struggle for some kind of ideal. 'The Best Man' raises important questions about how we choose our elected leaders and the types of personalities that rise to the top in American society."

In a nod to the play's political theme, audience members will be invited to cast a ballot for their preferred candidate during intermission each evening. The theatre company will keep a running tally after each show to see if contemporary voters pick the same candidate that Vidal decided to choose back in 1963. Each ballot will list the candidates and also offer a blank write-in spot where people can elect to vote for someone else.

The cast features Richard White (Sudbury) and Judson Pierce (Arlington), as the two rival candidates. Julie Korzenik (Marblehead) and Jessica Shulman (Salem) play the candidates' wives; Bob Karish and Marc Fillion (both of Salem) are the rival campaign managers. Craig Owen (Georgetown), Bob Stewart (Manchester), and Pauline Wright (Lynn) arbitrate the clash of the candidates as an ex-President, a Senator, and a Party activist respectively. The cast is rounded out by James DeSantis (Salem), Caroline Watson-Felt (Salem), Don Callahan (Salem), Jim Robinson (Lynn), Benjamin Casselman (Salem), Michael Croteau (Peabody), and Corey Smith (Salem).

The play is directed by Dominick Pangallo (Salem), stage managed by Jason Feran (Beverly), assistant stage managed by Cathleen Hoelscher (Beverly), and produced by Matteo Pangallo (Salem), with lighting design by William Smalley (Marblehead), sound design by Kevin Walker (Salem), and costume design by Alicia Greenwood (Salem).

Before the opening night performance, STC Board of Advisors member Mary Usovicz and Salem's State Representative John Keenan, will host an elegant reception at the National Park Service's Regional Visitors Center, located across the street from the theatre. The reception runs from 6:30pm to curtain, will feature fine food and wine from Effortless Edibles, and will include both current and past local and state public officials. Following the performance, reception guests will be invited to an exclusive mix-and-mingle coffee hour with the cast and crew.

"The Best Man" will be presented at St. Peter's Church hall, located at 24 St. Peter Street in downtown historic Salem, Massachusetts, May 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, and 28th at 8:00pm and May 15th and 22nd at 7:00pm. Tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for full-time students and seniors 65 and over. Tickets for the Opening Night Reception are $50 and include the pre-show reception, the performance that evening, and a coffee and tea meet-and-greet with the actors and crew after the show. Reservations and additional information are available by calling (978) 790-8546 or visiting www.SalemTheatre.org.

SALEM THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES CAST, PRODUCTION DATES FOR "THE BEST MAN"

Gore Vidal's classic American political drama to close critically acclaimed 2004-2005 Second Season of local theatre group

SALEM - The Salem Theatre Company will produce the classic American political drama THE BEST MAN, by award winning writer Gore Vidal, as the final production of the award-winning local theatre group's 2004-2005 Second Season.

The company of THE BEST MAN includes professional and local talent from Salem and around the North Shore, including Eastern Massachusetts Association of Community Theaters award nominees and winners, American College Theater Festival award nominees, and Independent Reviewers of New England theater award nominees.

"We're extremely pleased with the cast we're fielding for this particular production," said STC founding Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo, "It's a very powerful group in terms of experience, talent, and skill."

The cast features Richard White (Sudbury) and Judson Pierce (Arlington), as two rival candidates for their Party's presidential nomination. Julie Korzenik (Marblehead) and Jessica Shulman (Salem) turn in powerful performances as the candidates' wives, as do Bob Karish and Marc Fillion (both of Salem), as the rival campaign managers. Craig Owen (Georgetown), Bob Stewart (Manchester), and Pauline Wright (Lynn) arbitrate the clash of the candidates as an
ex-President, a Senator, and a Party activist respectively.

The cast is rounded out by James DeSantis (Salem), Caroline Watson-Felt (Salem), Don Callahan (Salem), Jim Robinson (Lynn), Benjamin Casselman (Salem), and Corey Smith (Salem).

Vidal's play tells the story of competing presidential candidates William Russell, the ex-Secretary of State and a liberal and scrupulous intellectual, and Joseph Cantwell, a young and ruthless Senator who will do whatever it takes to win the presidency. Each candidate uncovers powerful dirt on the other, but which will use it? What will the outcome be? And who, truly, is the best man in the end?

Although the play was written in the early 1960s, Vidal's characters and storyline are as relevant today as they ever were. Using the framework of the two campaigns, the play explores the ethics, emotions, and personalities that have come to characterize much of modern American politics.

"Vidal's fresh and sharp dialogue, his intriguing and surprising story, and his highly accessible characters all craft a play that is both timely and timeless," said production director (and twin brother of Matteo Pangallo) Dominick Pangallo, "In the play and in real life, we are constantly reassessing who the 'best man' is in politics and even what criteria we might use to make that judgment. The ethical dilemma which Vidal places his characters in the midst of is one that even today, over four decades later, we are still struggling to resolve."

The play has been in rehearsals for only two weeks, but already both Pangallo brothers are excited by the progress that has been made. "The company has really come together,"said Dominick, "They've been getting along as an ensemble since day one. I think they're going to bring a really engaging and sharp production of the play to the stage in May."

THE BEST MAN will be presented at St. Peter's Church parish hall, at 24 St. Peter Street in historic downtown Salem, Massachusetts, May 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, and 28th at 8:00pm and May 15th and 22nd at 7:00pm. Advance reservations and additional information are available by calling (978) 790-8546 or visiting the Calendar and Reservations page at www.SalemTheatre.org.

January 19, 2005

This February, the award-winning Salem Theatre Company will present one of the first American performances of THE BURIAL AT THEBES The play is a new version of Sophocles' classic Greek tragedy ANTIGONE, translated by Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney. Commissioned for the Abbey Theatre of Ireland's 100th anniversary this past year, THE BURIAL AT THEBES tells the legendary tale of Antigone, the daughter of the doomed Theban king Oedipus, and her fateful clash with the newly crowned king Creon.

"The play explores a number of timeless themes," notes STC Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo, "Most relevant to us today is the question of whether the good of the family outweighs the good of the state. Perhaps even more importantly, the play explores both the political and the personal consequences of conflict between a tyrannical state and a self-righteous martyr."

Heaney's version of the play, Pangallo notes, was specifically written in response to the current political climate in the United States. Heaney draws parallels between Creon's decree that the people of Thebes are either with him or against him and the Bush administration's use of the war on terror to determine whether people are "patriotic". In the postscript to his play, Heaney, who typically avoids taking overt political positions in his poetry, remarks, "The situation in Sophocles' play was being re-enacted in our own world. Just as Creon forced the citizens of Thebes into an either/or situation in relation to Antigone, the Bush administration in the White House was using the same tactic to forward its argument for war on Iraq."

"In the STC production we don't focus on the politics of the play," Pangallo says, "The politics underlie the story of the play without our needing to emphasize them. Instead, the cast has built a very tangible world around the epic characters who people the play and we explore the dynamic nature of the relationships between them and the terrifying situation they find themselves in." The STC cast features nearly a dozen professional and semi-professional actors from the area and a production team of community volunteers.

THE BURIAL AT THEBES runs February 10 - 26 on Thursdays and Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 5:00pm. It will be staged at St. Peter's Church hall, 24 St. Peter Street in downtown Salem, MA. Tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for students & seniors. For reservations and information call 978-790-8546 or visit www.salemtheatre.org.

All Hands On Deck!

The fall season is upon us and the Salem Theatre Company needs YOUR help!

In October, the STC will be presenting its family-friendly Halloween storytelling event "Chilling Tales", onboard Friendship of Salem at Derby Wharf. This event is supported by a partnership with the National Park Service Salem Maritime Historic Site and the Salem Partnership. The show features classic ghost stories of the sea adapted for live performance by Erik Rodenhiser, directed by Steve Stuart, and produced by Rob Gray. The stories are performed on the main deck, below decks, and in the cabins by a cast of professional actors from Boston and beyond.

We will need VOLUNTEERS to help staff the ticket booth we will have set up under the tent at Derby Street (at the foot of Derby Wharf, across the street from the Customs House). Performance evenings are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays; October 8 - 31st; 5:30pm-10:30pm each night. We need at least one volunteer each night, preferably two. Please email us at info@salemtheatre.org with the date(s) you can help out and your email address and phone number. Volunteers will sell tickets for the show and provide information about the STC and the show. Invariably (as we discovered last year), the volunteers also end up helping provide directions around Salem to lost and confused tourists, so it helps if you are familiar with the area.

Due to the popularity of this event with our volunteers, we will be providing spots on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to contact us as soon as you know what evening(s) you'd like to help out!

And remember: STC volunteers always get to see the show for free!

Thank you for helping your local nonprofit performing arts organization, and I wish you and your family the very best this autumn season.

Salem Theatre Production Honors Heroes of 9/11

Salem, MA -- Sigourney Weaver, Helen Hunt, Bill Murray, Susan Sarandon, Anthony LaPaglia. Celebrities have been lining up to perform in Anne Nelson's award-winning play "The Guys" since it first opened at New York City's Flea Theatre in December, 2001. And for good reason. Based on a true story, Nelson's play recounts her own experience as a freelance journalist living in New York just after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Two weeks after the attacks, she was approached by a fire captain who had lost most of the men in his company. Deep in grief, he was unable to find the words to deliver for the eulogies and he desperately needed her help. Over the course of the ninety minute play, Nelson brings us into the lives of these firefighters for a brief glimpse at how these average guys became heroes on one unforgettable morning in September.

For two more weekends, the Salem Theatre Company will present "The Guys" at the Newmark Building, located at 209 Essex Street on the pedestrian mall in downtown Salem. The production is directed by Pauline Wright of Lynn and features local award-winning actors Stephen Cooper and Carrie Russell, both of Marblehead. The play opened this past weekend to an extremely receptive audience, reports Salem Theatre Company Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo. "The power of this play resonates and goes home with you after the stage lights fade to dark," Pangallo notes, "We had audience members standing around in the lobby after the show sharing their feelings and memories with each other and with us. You don't see such incredible fellowship like that after most plays."

The Salem Theatre Company's production of "The Guys" runs through September 18th; Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00pm, and Sundays at 6:00pm. Tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for students seniors. They may be reserved either by calling 978-790-8546 or online at the STC website, www.salemtheatre.org. On Saturday, September 11th, the performance will be staged for one night only at the Morse Auditorium of the Peabody Essex Museum. Tickets for the performance on the 11th are $35 and proceeds will be donated to the City of Salem Fire Department.

August 25, 2004

Quite a bit has been going on with the Salem Theatre Company as we get ready for our 2004-2005 Second Season.

Please join me in welcoming STC Board Member Rob Gray into the position of President of the Salem Theatre Company. Rob has worked as the technical director and designer for many of our productions and will be producing both Chilling Tales this October and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in December.  As President of the organization, Rob's service as a leader will be highlighted as he helps us grow into a stronger and more effective organization.

Also note some of the changes that have been made to the website! You can now sign up for the email list or the mailing list using the form on the Contact Us page. You can also now make a RESERVATION ONLINE by using the easy-to-complete form located on the Calendar and Reservations page.

Finally, I would like to formally announce that 2004-2005 will be my final season as the Artistic Director of the Salem Theatre Company. After more than two years of hard work, it is time for the organization to further develop a diversity of leadership and artistic vision. I will be pursuing my own personal objectives next year by continuing my studies in higher education. Over the next year, I will be working with the Board to find an individual with the proper artistic leadership and passion for the theatre in order to take over as the next Artistic Director of this unique, award-winning theatre company.

All the best,

Matteo Pangallo

Salem, MA – The Salem Theatre Company will hold open auditions for its September production of Anne Nelson’s award-winning play The Guys on Wednesday, July 14 at 7:00pm, at the Salem Athenaeum (337 Essex Street). No preparation or experience is necessary. The cast will consist of one man, Nick, a New York firefighter (mid 30s to early 50s), and one woman, Joan, a freelance journalist (mid 30s to late 40s). Rehearsals will be held evenings in July and August. The Guys, which runs September 3 – 19, is the first production of the STC’s 2004-2005 Second Season and is directed by Pauline Wright. Questions may be directed to STC Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo at 978-790-8546 or info@salemtheatre.org.

About the Play

Less than two weeks after the September 11th attacks, New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them, an editor named Joan, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. As the two of them make their way through the emotional landscape of grief, they draw on humor, tango, the appreciation of craft in all its forms – and the enduring bonds of common humanity. The Guys is based on a true story. "A straight-from-the-gut beautifully written two-hander…laughter is heard as often as sobs," says CurtainUp. The Christian Science Monitor praises, "[The Guys is] a courageous and riveting play that tackles the horror of September 11th with an intimacy that’s both unsettling and healing." The Guys was recently made into a film starring Sigourney Weaver and Anthony LaPaglia.

Salem Theatre Company presents Open Mike Theatre Night

Salem, MA -- The Salem Theatre Company, a nonprofit performing arts organization based in Salem, Massachusetts, will host an Open Mike Theatre Night on Thursday, July 22, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at Front Street Coffeehouse (20 Front Street, Salem, MA).
"The Open Mike Theatre Night is a rare celebration of the dramatic arts in our community," says STC Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo. "Actors of all ages, all backgrounds, and all experience levels are encouraged to come and take the stage."
On April 23 the theatre company hosted a similar Open Mike Shakespeare Night at the coffeehouse in celebration of William Shakespeare's 440th Birthday. "We saw lots of great performances that evening," remarks Pangallo, "and since then the demand has been high for a repeat performance." Unlike the April open mike, which was dedicated exclusively to Shakespeare, performances for the July 22 event may be from any play by any playwright.
Interested participants are encouraged to contact the theatre company in order sign-up for a specific performance time slot (though Pangallo encourages any audience-members at the event who feels the spirit to take the stage as well, prepared or unprepared). Those signing up to perform should send their name and contact information, along with  the name of the play, playwright, character, approximate performance time, and style (comedy, tragedy, romance, etc.) to info@salemtheatre.org or 978-790-8546. There is no restriction on style, content, genre, or form; performances may be monologues, scenes or parts of scenes, or whole short plays (five minutes or less). There will be a $5 cover charge at the door to help support the company's year-round season of performing arts activities.

About STC's Production of The Tempest

The Tempest is directed by Matteo Pangallo, the founder and Artistic Director of the STC. The production is designed by Rob Gray, Amy Aldrich, and Matteo Pangallo, with music by Salvatore Pangallo and William Shube. The stage manager is Catherine Mangan. Special voice coaching is provided by Andrew Wade, Master of Voice for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The cast, drawn from Salem and the North Shore, is composed of Amy Aldrich (Ariel), Jim Butterfield (Prospero), Steve Feiven (Antonio), Marc Fillion (Trinculo), Christopher Finn (Boatswain), Jeremy McKeen (Stephano), Amanda Meehan (Miranda), John Melczer (Sebastian), Janelle Mills (Ariel), Craig Owen (Alonso), Dave Rich (Caliban), Jim Robinson (Gonzalo), and Corey Smith (Ferdinand).

"The Tempest is a tale for all times and all people," remarks Pangallo. "Of all Shakespeare's plays it has the greatest number of global influences - with touches of European, North American, South American, and African traditions, folktales, and characters. Like Salem itself, The Tempest is a cultural crossroads. In its heart-lifting story of reconciliation and forgiveness, of love found and families reunited, we see Shakespeare work his own most perfect magic of language, music, and enchantment. Prospero's island, like both the stage and 'the great globe itself', is a world where nothing is beyond the infinite power of our imagination. And as Shakespeare's final work, it is fitting for the STC to conclude its inaugural season with this singularly greatest of plays."

Production of The Tempest is made possible in part by a grant from the Salem Arts Council, the local branch of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Salem Theatre Company Presents New Play Series

TheSalem Theatre Company presents the first reading in its New Play Series, on Thursday, February 5, at 7:00pm at the Front Street Coffeehouse in downtown Salem.

The STC's New Play Series is a program designed to give local and regional playwrights an opportunity to hear their new works read by local actors in a relaxed setting. Following the reading, the audience and the actors have the chance to provide feedback to the playwright and to ask questions about the script.

Since announcing its call for scripts in early December, the STC has received many submissions. Some from first-time playwrights, some from seasoned professionals. Despite the range in the writers' backgrounds, the scripts do share a common thread. "All of the submissions," says STC Artistic Director Matteo Pangallo, "demonstrate the immense artistic potential here in Salem and on the North Shore. The number we've received and the enthusiasm of the participating writers shows that there's a real thirst in this area for what the STC is trying to do."

The reading on Thursday, February 5, will be of the one act play What Mickey Belle Isle Told You. The script is by Weston playwright Con Chapman and will be presented by four veterans of the STC, Jim Butterfield, Bob Karish, Dominick Pangallo, and Dave Rich. Set in a blue-collar Boston suburb, the play tells the story of a father/son relationship that has reached its breaking point.

What Mickey Belle Isle Told You will be presented at 7:00pm on February 5, at the Front Street Coffehouse. The Front Street Coffeehouse is at 20 Front Street in historic downtown Salem, MA. Tickets are $10 at the door and include the discussion following the reading. For more information call 978-790-8546.

The Salem Theatre Company has announced it is a recipient of a $1800 grant from Target Corporation. The grant will be used to fund two eight-week afterschool workshops at the Bates Elementary School in north Salem. The workshops will be led by Erik Rodenhiser and Keri Cahill and will introduce the nearly forty student participants involved to the fundamentals of theatre arts. The students will explore such skills as improvisation, dramatic storytelling, role-playing, and the use of such theatrical tools as masks, properties, and costumes. Cahill, who is the director of the youth theatre organization "Rebel Shakespeare Company", and Rodenhiser, who is a local professional theatre artist, are both members of the STCs Board of Directors.

"We are particularly excited about this grant and these workshops," says Matteo Pangallo, Artistic Director of the STC. "The mission of the Salem Theatre includes providing resources for performing arts education outreach in the community. This grant makes that possible." According to Pangallo, one of the core beliefs of the STC is that every person is an artist and that every artist deserves an opportunity to take the stage. The workshops are designed to provide an additional outlet to the students of the Bates School so they will be able to express their artistic creativity with the guidance and support of an experienced performing artist.

Target Corporation has a strong tradition of giving back to the communities where they do business and this year that giving will amount to $2 million a week. That commitment is reflected in Target Stores grant-making program, which supports projects that promote the arts, education, and family violence prevention. "At Target Corporation, we feel it is not only our responsibility to give back to the community, we feel it is our privilege," says Laysha Ward, Vice President of Community Relations for Target. "The Salem Theatre Company is doing incredible things to help strengthen the Salem community."

The Salem Theatre Company announces open auditions for its fall production of Arthur Miller's classic play The Crucible. Auditions will be on Thursday, September 4 from 7:30pm-10:00pm and Sunday, September 7 from 2:00pm-5:00pm at the Salem Athenaeum (337 Essex Street).

The Crucible is set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, an enclave of rigid piety wedged between the sea and the wilderness. The townspeople have a seemingly unshakable belief in their own sanctity. But when a vengeful teenager accuses a rival of witchcraft, a moral virus is unleashed that infects and consumes the entire community. Arthur Miller's Tony Award-winning play is a taut, multi-layered exploration of pride, principle and paranoia. The production is directed by John Fogle.

The Crucible has roles for 11 men and 10 women ranging in age from early teens to 70s. Actors of all levels of experience are invited to audition. Prepared audition-pieces are encouraged but not required and readings will be conducted from the script, which will be available at the auditions.

Rehearsals will begin in mid-September, on weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons until the November 6th opening. Performances are scheduled for Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through November 22.

The Salem Theatre Company is also seeking designers and production crew, including set, lighting, makeup and costume designers, assistant stage manager, running crew and publicist.

On August 12, members of the Board of Directors spent an evening at a plannign retreat held at Winter Island in Salem and facilitated by City Councilor Claudia Chuber. The evening went very well and the group succeeded in coming up with many ideas to improve the STC's operating procedures including amending the mission statement, articulating artistic objectives, setting long-term and short-term goals, and outlining the roles of the Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, and Artistic Director. Highlights of the report from this retreat are available by contacting info@salemtheatre.org.

 August 12, 2003

2003 is going to be an exceptional year for the arts here on the North Shore. The Salem Theatre Company has already kicked off its inaugural season with its summer production of A. R. Gurney's comedy Sylvia. Nearly 300 people came to see the show, and were looking forward to more than twice as many coming to see our next production: Arthur Miller's stirring American classic The Crucible, directed by John Fogle, at the parish hall of St. Peter's Church in downtown Salem.

Even though 2003-2004 is our first season we have a great number of activities and programs planned for the coming year. After The Crucible in November, we will be presenting The Santaland Diaries and Season's Greetings at the Salem Athenaeum in December. These pieces are two humorous Christmas monologues by David Sedaris, adapted for the stage by Tony Award-winning playwright Joe Mantello. Then, in May of 2004, we will be staging Shakespeare's celebrated tale of romance, music, and magic: The Tempest. Additionally, we are hoping to offer a number of concerts, workshops, and after school programs in the coming years.

Ticket sales are slowly increasing as more people hear about our efforts to bring the performing arts to Salem, but even with the most generous of estimates ticket sales are only going to cover approximately 50% of our anticipated expenses. This is where you can step in and take on a leading role without setting a single foot on the stage. Your contribution helps to ensure that the Salem Theatre Company can carry out its programming plans, stage its productions, and keep its ticket prices as affordable as possible.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to the Salem Theatre Company, your gift will be tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Please make checks payable to Salem Theatre Company and send them to us at 27 Buffum Street/ Salem, MA  01970.

For your convenience, the STC Board of Directors has created the following series of donors' categories (all donors in the categories listed below receive a free STC bumpersticker and all those in the Actor's Circle and above will be listed in our production programs):

If a financial contribution is impossible for you at this time, there are many other ways you can help support our efforts: sign up to join our team of volunteers to help build, paint, usher, or work backstage on a show, or consider buying or talking to your employer about buying advertising space in one of our production programs. Finally, you can help us by telling your friends about our efforts. With your help, and the help of other arts-loving people like you, we can make the mission of the Salem Theatre Company into a reality. Please consider supporting our efforts.

July 5, 2003

I would like to briefly thank the many individuals who
helped make the Salem Fourth of July festivities such
a huge success. This was the first year the Salem
Theatre Company was involved with the event and we
were thrilled to be a part of it!

In particular, I would like to thank the volunteers
who worked at the STC table, including Georgette Pied,
Norene Gachignard, Polly Rodenhiser, Hannah Diozzi,
Jean Fogle, Ursina Amsler and Griffin, and the many
others who helped out. I would also like to thank
those members of our Board of Directors who pitched in
to put our table together and staff it, including John
Fogle, Richard King, Erik "Captain Scurvy" Rodenhiser,
and our coordinator Peg Voss. I would like to offer
special thanks to Board member Mary Usovicz for
pulling the entire evening together and helping us get
a spot on the wharf and to Crosby's Market for giving
the STC a special deal on watermelons and cookies.

The Salem Theatre Company was proud to help the City
celebrate our country's Independence Day and honor the
men and women of our armed forces. I look forward to
future opportunities in which the STC can provide its
services to the city, its residents, and its
neighbors. For more information about the Company,
including details on our first production -- "Sylvia",
by A. R. Gurney -- going up from July 18 to August 3
at the Bates Elementary School, visit us online at
www.salemtheatre.org or call 978-317-5821.

The show will be directed by Adrienne Effron, with stage management by Virginia Kingman, lighting design by Donald Christensen, and assistant direction by Matteo Pangallo.

The Salem Theatre Company is working on a number of exciting projects for the coming months. Here's what's going on:

* The STC is in discussions with the National Park Service's Maritime Center regarding a special series of events for Haunted Happenings.

* The Salem YMCA has come through for the STC and has volunteered their Whipple Room for our rehearsal space!

* Look for the Salem Theatre Company booth on Pickering Wharf during the City of Salem's Fourth of July celebration. If you would like to volunteer to help out at the booth for part of the afternoon or evening, call 978-317-5821.

* The casting for our first 2003-2004 production, A. R. Gurney's comedy Sylvia, is now complete and rehearsals have begun. Watch this site for more information about the company.

* The STC is seeking business sponsors; if you are a business-owner on the North Shore, call 978-317-5821 or email info@salemtheatre.org for more information about becoming a Primary Production Sponsor, Secondary Production Sponsor, Season Underwriter, or purchasing advertising space in one of our production programs.

* On a related note, the Salem Theatre Company is now a proud and active member of both the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Stage Source.

May 17, 2003

This is it!

Your last chance to be a part of the first production of the Salem Theatre Company's inaugural 2003-2004 Season is coming up!

There will be one more evening of auditions on TUESDAY, MAY 20 at 6:30pm at the Bates School theatre, on Liberty Hill Avenue. We are particularly interested in finding two male actors, age 35-55.

To schedule an audition, email adrienneeffron@yahoo.com.

April 26, 2003

Just a reminder: auditions for our first show, "Sylvia", are coming up on May 14 and 15. Auditions will be held at the Bates School, 53 Liberty Hill Avenue. Park behind the school and enter the building from the front entrance. The theater is located straight down the steps, through the lobby, and up the smaller flight of stairs.

If you would like to confirm your intention to audition (recommended), please email info@salemtheatre.org as soon as possible. Once again, we are looking for two men and two women. For further information, you may email us at the above address.

April 21, 2003

Due to the City's apparent lack of interest in transforming Old Town Hall into an arts center, the Salem Theatre Company will be exploring alternative spaces around town for development into a performing arts facility. To this end, a committee of several Board members has been formed, this committee is composed of Richard King, Jim Haskell, and Erik Rodenhiser. Currently we are looking at space at the Shetland Park properties, next to Salem Harbor. Working with the committee in exploring this space will be Jud Pierce and Tony Salvo.

We are still looking for a performance space for "The Crucible" for this November. Please help our search by emailing us your suggested spaces!

Season Tickets are still on sale: $45 for adults, $36 for students and seniors.

Don't forget to make a note on your calendar: auditions for "Sylvia" will be on May 14 and 15 at the Bates School. Email info@salemtheatre.org for more info.

Finally, I would like to offer a heart-felt congratulations to former member of the Board of Advisors Erik Rodenhiser on two accounts. First, for his election to the Board of Directors. And second, for the arrival of the newest little member of the Rodenhiser clan. All the best from the Salem Theatre Company!

April 9, 2003

March 30, 2003

I would like to thank the nearly 140 guests who attended "A Taste for the Arts", the inaugural reception and dinner of the Salem Theatre Company's 2003-2004 Season, held on Friday, March 28 at Colonial Hall. It is through the support of individuals such as these that the STC will be able to fund its full season of performances and events.

I would like to offer a special thanks to the many volunteers who helped make the evening possible by putting up posters, running the tables, and helping with the set-up and clean-up. In particular I would like to thank Mayor Stanley Usovicz for attending and speaking at the event, and I would like to thank Joan Boudreau and Lee Harrington for the use of the beautiful, historic space at Colonial Hall. The students of the Phoenix School did an outstanding job with the decorations for the evening and many of the guests came up to me with exuberant praise for the centerpieces and the life-sized characters. A special thanks to the actors and directors who shared their gifts with us by gracing our stage that evening and demonstrating the wealth of talent and emotional power that is contained within the performing arts community here in the Salem area. Finally, the evening would not have occured without the dedication and skills of the Event Committee, those members of the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors who helped put it all together: Peg Voss, Mary Usovicz, John Fogle, Erik Rodenhiser, and Judson Pierce.

The first season of the Salem Theatre Company is now underway. The volunteers and board members of the STC are hard at work planning the four shows that will be upcoming over the course of the year. The 2003-2004 Season will bring the North Shore the following productions: A. R. Gurney's "Sylvia" in July/August 2003, Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" in November 2003, David Sedaris's "The Santaland Diaries and Season's Greetings" in December 2003, and Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in May 2004. Season Tickets cost $45 for adults and $36 for students and seniors (admission to 4 plays for the price of 3) and can be ordered by calling (978) 317-5821 or emailing info@salemtheatre.org.

March 19, 2003

Seats are going fast for "A Taste for the Arts", so be sure to call (978-317-5821) or email (info@salemtheatre.org) and make your reservation!

At the last meeting of the Board of Directors, it was decided that the Salem Theatre Company will be holding another fundraising activity in October, in conjunction with Haunted Happenings. More information will be provided as the details become clearer.

We're still looking for an assistant production manager for Sylvia, as well as one more volunteer house manager. Email info@salemtheatre.org if you're interested in one of these positions or would like more information.

Our on-going efforts to find a permanent home in Salem are underway and we're currently petitioning the City to release a Request-for-Proposals on Old Town Hall so we may submit our plan to convert the space into an Arts Center before November. Call your City Councilors and the Mayor today and let them know you support our cause!

In the meantime, the STC is on the hunt for a rehearsal space. If you know of an empty church hall or similar space that is available for little-to-nothing for a small, nonprofit theatre group to rehearse in during evenings in the summer and fall, please contact us right away!

March 3, 2003

We are now accepting reservations for the March 28th "A Taste for the Arts" event. Seats are going fast, so call and reserve your's today! (Visit the "Tickets" page for more information.)

February 7, 2003

The Salem Theatre Company is proud to welcome former Salem Mayor Tony Salvo to our Board of Directors.

January 31, 2003

The Salem Theatre Company is pleased to welcome Mary Usovicz to the Board of Advisors. Mary joins a team of dedicated local artists, officials, residents, and business-owners who are excited about bringing the performing arts back to Salem.

We are slowly making advances on the Old Town Hall front. On February 11, members of the Boards will be meeting with city officials to discuss the best avenue to securing the use of Old Town Hall as an arts center.

Due to a lack of air-conditioning, we will probably not be using the Collins Middle School Auditorium as the venue for "Sylvia" this summer. Visit our "Calendar" page for updates on venues.

Please note that the STC production of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" has been moved to November.

Now that the 2003-2004 Season is coming into place and as the hunt for a permanent home commences, the fundraising campaign is also beginning. Visit the "Membership" page for more information on how YOU can help!

* Both "The Guys" and "Vagina Monologues" have been removed from the program due to rights restrictions. No September play will replace "The Guys". Keri Cahill will still be directing a yet-to-be-determined February play.

* In December 2003 we have added David Sedaris' Christmas monologues: "The Santaland Diaries" and "Season's Greetings" (adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello). Matteo Pangallo will direct. The venue will be the Salem Athenaeum.

October 4, 2002

Thank you for your patience and your input over the last month as we have attempted to pin-down the 2003-2004 season for the young Salem Theatre Project. We are pleased to announce that the following productions have been scheduled for the upcoming season. Venues have yet to be booked, however, and those listed below merely represent what we HOPE to get. For those of you who suggested plays that did not make it into the season, we hope to continue working with you so we may include them in the next season and in
the future: let's plan on being around for a while!

In addition to the positions listed beneath each performance, we are looking for a company publicist to handle all of our press release, poster, postcard, and advertising activities. As with many of the positions listed below, this job will receive a small compensatory fee.

Any auditions for the productions this season will be announced as they are scheduled by the individual production directors.

Finally, over the next two months we will be corresponding with the individuals who have been invited to serve on the Board of Directors and the Board of Advisors. These people will be responsible for leading the organization in development and fundraising, hiring decisions, programming, and policy-making. As soon as both Boards have been filled, we will send out an announcement with the names of the members.

Letter to the Salem News:
Letter: Local theater group has promising future

To the Editor:

"Prospects brilliant; situation desperate, as usual."
-- August Strindberg

I would like to thank the dozens of volunteers and members who helped the Salem Theatre Project successfully stage its first summer season.

The hard work and determination of this group of people allowed us to stage our two productions this summer -- "The Complete History of America (abridged)" and "Zoo Story" -- and bring the performing arts back to downtown Salem.

Hundreds of people from all over the North Shore and the country came to Salem to see these two shows and, through their support of the arts, have helped us raise enough money to begin planning a full 2003-2004 season.

More information about the upcoming season will become available in the near future. In the meantime, anybody interested in getting more information about how they can help the project should visit our website at www.salemtheatre.org.

Again, thank you to our volunteers and our members, and thank you to the community for supporting this young, but determined, organization!

Matteo A. Pangallo, Director
-Salem Theatre Project

August 26, 2002:
From the Director-
Thank you to all of those individuals who helped this summer, as volunteers, as members, as artists, and as audience-members. The summer 2002 Season of the Salem Theatre Project was a great success!

This coming fall we'll be taking a hiatus from production work to focus on the other crucial side of starting a theatre company: incorporation and management. Doesn't sound as glamarous, but it is just as important.

As most of you know, we have secured 501(c)3 nonprofit status by merging with the inactive Salem Arts Center organization. Now begins the process of identifying a board of directors for our nonprofit corporation. Already
a few individuals have been gracious enough to accept my initial invitation. I am still looking for suggestions for three to five additional people to serve in this capacity. In particular, I am looking for:
- community figureheads or leaders
- someone with strong connections in the community
- someone with a background in fundraising
- someone with a legal background in nonprofit/arts law
- someone with a background in accounting

Candidates need not fulfill *all* (or even one) of these criteria - these are merely suggestions for what I'm looking for.

Also this fall I will be releasing more information regarding next year's productions. The full 2003-2004 season will include 4 productions and at least 1 concert or fundraising event. I will be looking for production staff as well as artists for these events. By the end of September, more information regarding auditions, volunteering, and specific production staff positions available will be posted on the website. Many positions
will have to be on a volunteer-basis, though some of those which require more time and energy will be compensated by a percentage of the production's box office net.

Finally, I would like to thank the numerous individuals who have suggested productions for the 2003-2004 season. I assure you that I will consider every suggestion carefully and completely.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any comments or questions regarding the Project.

August 19, 2002:

At the close of the day yesterday (Sunday), almost 300 people had attended one of the Project's two productions this month.  Our inaugural show, "The Complete History of America (abridged)", which opened last week, was a stunning and hysterical success.  In fact, it drew many people back for a second or third time this weekend!  The other production, Edward Albee's "Zoo Story" saw its audience explode by over 250% between its opening performance and its closing yesterday, as word of mouth spread like wildfire and sold-out houses at the Salem Athenaeum Garden packed in to see this powerful performance.  Audience members at both shows came from as far as Europe and the West Coast, and as near as down the street.

All in all, the last two weeks proved without a doubt that the Salem Theatre Project is a viable and necessary component of Salem's cultural composition.  As the "North Shore Sunday" newspaper put it when they previewed the Project's inaugural season, "It's about time."  Please continue to watch this space for more information about our final production of this season, tentatively scheduled for January, and also for important information about next season's productions and future meetings.  Become a member of the Project by clicking on the Membership link above!

August 13, 2002:

The Salem Theatre Project's inaugural production, "The Complete History of America (abridged)", had an unbelievably successful opening this past weekend.  About one hundred and fifty people came to see the three shows during the first weekend of the production, which also coincided with the first weekend of Salem's Heritage Days festival.  There are still some tickets left for next weekend's shows, but they are going fast - so be sure to book yours today! 978-744-8796 or email info@salemtheatre.org.

Advanced sales and reservations for the Project's second production this summer, "Zoo Story," are also moving along very well.  Plan on reserving your ticket early!  Call today! 978-744-8796 or email info@salemtheatre.org.

Watch this space for important announcements about future productions this year at the Salem Theatre Project, as well as information about next year's season of great shows.

July 15, 2002:

A brief update: the website has been touched up, courtesy of Dominick Pangallo. Check out the poster for "The Complete History of America (abridged)" on our homepage. Most importantly, visit our Membership page to see how you can pay for your membership online!

July 10, 2002:

Here is the latest news from the Salem Theatre Project:

* Several more people have joined as Members. I would like to thank them and the handful of people who attended the last meeting on July 9th. I would like to extend a particular welcome and thank you to City Councilor Kim Driscoll, Ward Five, for joining the Project!

* Posters for "Complete History (abridged)" are ready to go up. I'm looking for volunteers to take ten or twenty posters and try to hang them up in businesses and public places around Salem and the surrounding areas. Please contact me to help out.

* The production of "Zoo Story" has moved to Saturday, August 17 at 3pm and Sunday, August 18 at 6pm. Location is still the garden at the Athenaeum (rain site, TBA). "Complete History of America (abridged)" is still on for August 9-11 and 16-18, 8pm Fridays and Saturdays, 2pm Sundays, in Colonial Hall at the Daniel Low Building.

* Other volunteers needed for: box office/ushering on the evenings and afternoons of both shows, distributing fliers to people for an hour or so during the Salem Chamber of Commerce's Essex Street Fair on August 10. Please contact me as soon as possible to help out!

* I have put together an email list for the Project now. If you would like to be added to the list, please drop me an email at info@salemtheatre.org

* The Salem Theatre Project will now start using the 501(c)3 formerly belonging to the Salem Arts Center, Inc. Before we can officially conduct business as a nonprofit, however, we need to have a Board of Directors in place. Please feel free to submit ideas for potential candidates to me any time over the next few weeks, before a final decision is made on the composition of the Board. We are looking for individuals who: 1.) are active members of the community, 2.) have backgrounds in arts, arts management, fundraising, accounting, or nonprofit law, and 3.) are willing to volunteer serious time in a leadership capacity for a young but potentially strong organization.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas you might have regarding the Project!

June 29, 2002:

Thank you to those who attended the second meeting of the Salem Theatre Project. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 9, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Salem Athenaeum. There are a number of important events coming up, so mark your calendars and come help out!

* Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24, the garden of the Salem Athenaeum: Edward Albee's classic American play "Zoo Story". Directed and performed by Charlie Semine and Jason Rabin.

* Friday, Saturday, Sunday, August 9-11 and 16-18, Colonial Hall: "The Complete History of America (abridged)", just in time for Heritage Days. Directed by John Fogle; starring Erik Rodenhiser, Caleb Mayo, and Steve Cooper.

*Saturday, August 10, Derby Square: Selections from "The Complete History of America (abridged)" performed for free on the street for the Salem Chamber of Commerce's Essex Street Fair.

*Transfer to nonprofit status. The Salem Arts Center, Inc. (founded 1996) may be voting to transfer their 501(c)3 status and bylaws to the Salem Theatre Project. If they do, we need to assemble a strong board of directors to take control of the organization. Please attend our next meeting to nominate individuals for the board.

For more information on these events, please contact Project Director Matteo Pangallo at (978) 744-8796. Also, click on our Membership page to learn more about joining the Project!

June 12, 2002:

Thank you to the individuals who came to the first planning meeting. The group has decided to go ahead and start planning specific programming events before organizing into a nonprofit corporation. These events will help to "test the waters" for the organization as well as increase its public face. The next meeting is planned for MONDAY, JUNE 24, 7:00pm to 9:00pm AT THE SALEM ATHENAEUM ON ESSEX STREET.

May 17, 2002:

Announcing the first planning meeting of the Salem Theatre Project. To be held on Monday, June 10, 2002 at the Salem Athenaeum on Essex Street, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. There is only seating available for 30 people, so contact us today (info@salemtheatre.org) to reserve your seat!!

April 29, 2002:

It looks like the number of performances this summer will be trimmed back to only one or two shows. We'll be focusing on organizing and incorporating as a nonprofit performing arts company this summer. To that end, we are currently planning an open-to-the-public information and idea sharing meeting for late in May. More information will be forthcoming.

April 24, 2002

The good folks at www.SalemWeb.com have just finished running a month-long online poll on their homepage, soliciting public opinion about the idea behind the Salem Theatre Project. Here are the results:

"Would you attend a professional play in downtown Salem?" 87% say yes.

"Would you volunteer at a theater in downtown Salem?" 40% say yes.

"Would you subscribe to season tickets to a theater in downtown Salem?" 38% say yes.

"Would you contribute a financial gift or donation to a nonprofit theater in downtown Salem?" 33% say yes.

March 24, 2002:

Plans are coming together for a 2002 Summer Theatre Company in downtown Salem! Composed of Salem/Marblehead residents, the Company will be performing three different productions this coming July-August. More information will be forthcoming in the near future.
